What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss (also called alopecia) refers to excessive shedding or thinning of hair from the scalp or other areas of the body. It can appear as a widening part, thinning at the crown or temples, patchy hair loss, or increased shedding in the shower or on your pillow. Hair loss affects both men and women and can occur at any age.

While some daily shedding is normal, persistent or progressive hair loss is not and should be evaluated.

 

Why Hair Loss Happens 

Hair growth follows a natural cycle of growth, rest, and shedding. Hair loss occurs when this cycle is disrupted or when hair follicles become damaged or miniaturized.
